Guinea pigs should not be fed Iceberg lettuce because it is incredibly low in nutritional content. The lettuces that are best for guinea pigs to eat are Red Leaf, Green Leaf, Romaine, Cos and Little Gem.

Is Iceberg Lettuce Poisonous to Guinea Pigs?

Iceberg lettuce is not poisonous to your pet and won't harm them if eaten but it can give them diarrhoea as it contains a lot of water.

In fact this watery salad vegetable has 96% water content! Vitamin C, a very important nutrient for guinea pigs as their bodies don't make this essential vitamin , is also very low but higher in other lettuce varieties.

What Lettuces are Best?

Guinea pigs love red and green leaf varieties as well as Romaine lettuces. If you can buy them from a market rather than a grocery store, you'll find you get a lot more leaves for your money. Supermarkets often take off perfectly edible outer leaves so they look attractive on the shelves.

What Other Leaves Can Guinea Pigs Eat?

Guinea pigs can also eat rocket, spinach, kale, dandelion, watercress, some herbs and other green leaves but just be careful of the calcium content if your guinea pigs are on a low calcium diet.
